Scary Stuff

Media_httpwww123peoplecoukstatic10902imagesgirl1gif_imuhzzuwhhgwonf

This scary website shows all instances of your name online!

I have finished all the table mats! *does dance*

I have also started a table runner. Tom's mum gave us her old table, so we now have it's lovely antique oak joy in the dining room. I wish I could l find my camera so I could take some pictures. We've had dinner up to the table the last few times we've all been in and it is great.

I can't believe how homey it is all feeling. We found some stretchy sofa covers on ebay so now the red sofas are cream and go with the room.

I have the mammoth task of sewing curtains for the bay window in the living room which involves 8+ metres of fabric! Oh my!

Somethings in Life Just Need to Be Shared.

Reading .net magazine today at work I came across:

How awesome is this? It kind of reflects the way I think! If adapted for web search I think it would make an excellent research tool.

The rain today left me cold and wet through to the skin, so ??I spent the evening drying off whilst painting the Living room. I have to say, Tom has some pretty excellent friends. Today was the third or fourth day Sandy had put in on the painting, and Laura was here today too. We're now on the second coat of cream and green paint in the new room. As soon as I remember to charge my digital camera I'll post some pictures.

My mum had written me a veritable epistle today, along with posting a Good Luck in your new home card. I have grand plans to publish my mum's letters someday. I think she's kept all mine so it should be quite a book! Her letters are always full of news and gossip and interesting things she's read.??

I often think I ought to write down all the wonderful things we used to do when I was a child. Like playing with the skiiing playmobil with terry nappies over cushions to make hills of snow.

I've also been writing down more stories for my novel/social history book. I'm collecting stories about how people met their partners. If you like share yours with me!

One room down, one to go...

So the move has happened. After some fairly stressful moving, interrupted by a lovely wedding and a music festival, both of which were awesome, we have one room decorated and moved into.

The bedroom has gentle yellow walls, and purple feature wall in decorating lingo. I'm searching for the perfect something for the purple wall as my klimt canvas print was too wide. Any suggestions for something else? I was thinking another Klimt print?

Is £34.00 , and is the other detail from Water Serpents II which my current painting is from.

Any other ideas?

Could have this:

http://bit.ly/14QjJC

Also would love to get this http://bit.ly/gq7pE  for the dining table and one of the following lights:

Surrounded by expectation

In the next room, Tom and Sandy are packing up his stuff.

I'm sat opposite a pile of my things all crammed into boxes. The frame work of a build it yourself fitted wardrobe from Ikea rests against the wall.

In the midst of the June sunshine, I'm taking a huge step. Tomorrow, Tom and I will move in together.

To my traditional heart this is slightly backwards, not the done thing. But the modern heart and my brain is leaping and soaring. No more going back to my house. No more hassle with travel. No more wishing we are together.

Just more lazy mornings together. More gardening. More Joy.

I just can't wait.

Don't you just hate it when you wake up early at the weekend?

After the most manic of weeks, by rights I should be asleep. Alas I am not. I am up, sorting out my finances for the month, and preparing to go to the gym or to swim before my driving lesson. This should be an interesting day. Whilst my darling boy sweats in the exam hall, I shall be praying and hoping. I have my driving lesson, then I must go to town to try and change all my addresses. The hair dressers beckons next, where I will spend a good 3 hours hopefully ending up mightily more attractive. The early evening is devoted to the lovely Amelia, and planning her wedding hair and her veil. Finally I will see the boy in the evening, and celebrate the end of his University career. Before actually sleeping I hope.

Mainly though, right now, I want to be asleep. Lula and I had a late night watching the Twilight film. In which nothing happens. The books weren't the best thing in the world, but they were pacey. The film? The film, just ugh...

We did have nice food at La Margherita before though, :o) I had some aubergine/tomato penne dish. Very yummy. Lulabelle had seabass which came in a creamy garlic sauce and with a side of a spicy spaghetti. I would have had a plate of that spaghetti on my own I could.

The B Team

"Hello, you're through to the B team.

Are you having a sewing emergency, do you need to be told how to sort out your life, help filling in a job application or work on your CV?

Press 1 for Alex.

Do you need to be told to man up? Do you require practical assistance, transport or an English gentleman to take you to dinner?

Press 2 for John.

Do you need someone to listen to you, a shoulder to cry on, a good cup of tea, a sonoderous voice or general chemical supplies?

Press 3 for Andy.

Do you require a meal cooked for 50+ people, smaller scale transport, events management, advise on canon law, a lack of tact or a sommeilier?

Press 4 for Tom.

If you require drugs, press the hash key. You will then be subjected to lecture."

BEEP!

"You have pressed 2."

"For self service MAN UP advice, press 1. For transport, press 2, for bridge building and other construction concerns, press 3, to be taken to dinner by a handsome young man, press 4, for annoyance please hold. Handsome young man may be delayed by a few days if young man is up a mountain, or may not be the young man advertised."

BEEP!

"You have pressed 2."

If you require a small car, press 1, a large car, press 2, a van press 3, or a tank, press 4. If you require a van or a tank, there may be a delay of up to a week. A large car may require a few days. Press the Star key to go back to the menu."

BEEP!

At least, this how it's supposed to work. When one of our circle of friends has an emergency, it's always us who get the phone call. And if we're having an emergency, we call John. Tonight, we were the secondary emergency supplier. Girl A, contacted Andy, finding herself stranded at A and E, having escorted Girl B there in her moment of need. Andy had the cab fare. Tom had a car. I had a plan. Well I went to supervise. Money changed hands, all is now well we hope.

Crisis adverted, the B team to the rescue again. We did consider calling John, but we decided we had it under control.

Then we went to Tescos and bought, cake, wine and champagne. Not just any champagne, Tattinger. Honest.

I tell you. Could my life get any weirder?

The B Team. If you have a problem, maybe you shouldn't call.

Transfigurations--Transgressing Gender in the Bible by Peterson Toscano, a Review

Last night I went to see Transfigurations--Transgressing Gender in the Bible by Peterson Toscano (Blog, Twitter) at the University of Southampton.

The evening had been organised by SCM Southampton, as part of their radical, challenging, inclusive and aware mission to students at University.

Peterson, a Quirky Queer Quaker according to his Twitter, had put together a both funny and moving performance that delved into lives the gender transgressive characters in the Bible. The solo performance saw Peterson cycle through a range of characters such as Deborah, Esau, an enuch from the court of King Xerxes, who were all woven together by a character narrating through extracts from the Gospel of Thomas. The bible characters and their stories were embellished with lines taken from interviews Toscano had conducted with modern day transgender people.

Toscano is an accomplished actor, who switched seamless between the different characters. I was very impressed with the way he created a believable world with the bare minimum of set and costume. His vocal abilities were also outstanding, each accent believable and authentic.

Whilst his reading of certain bible characters as transgender is only one of many ways to see these treasured stories, it was refreshing and a pleasure to be reminded of the radical and inclusive nature of the teachings of Jesus.

We were also treated with exerpts from his other works and a question and answer session. Highly recommended.

All the Small Things

I've been watching "All The Small Things" on BBC iPlayer.

...and I love it!

I don't get much chance to watch telly anymore. Most of it doesn't interest me.

But this, this? It fills with me with joy. It's about warring choirs and their members, the conductors of which are an estranged married couple. That's beside the point.

What I love about it is that it's about a church! A living breathing church full of members of all ages. Who band together to help members of the community. Such as when an immigrant couple decide to get married, they all chip in help with the big day.

It's what church should be. It's what I want church to be. Let's make it happen!

Also...

Tom and I are doing a sponsored walk for Christian Aid. Sponsor Us!

Joyous

So I fell off my bike on Friday.

Quite spectacularly. Grazed my chin, bruised my face, took a whopping great chunk out of my left knee. My helmet was a write off. Thank God I was wearing it! It seems the brakes failed. Which isn't good when you're halfway down a hill but oh well and ouch.

Apart from the bruising I had a fun weekend with Tom buy housey things. Saturday was his birthday and we spent it trawling round the Range, Homebase, Ikea and John Lewis. It doesn't sound fun when written like that. But I really enjoyed it.

We bought cream and red rococo print fabric for dining room blinds, a roman blind to use as a template, giant picture frames for my artwork, paint tester pots and living room curtain fabric. The living room fabric was half price in John Lewis. We confused the shop assistant a bit with our maths. the tester pots are now a patchwork across Tom's wall. That is especially joyous!

April So Far

This month is beginning and ending with cake.

I spent a great weekend with Jess in High Wycombe at the beginning of the month, mainly baking which was fun. We made some cake pops a la Bakerella.

Here is in pictorial form:

This is Jess' awesome cake tin of joy!

... and her catering sized roll of greasproof paper...

..which she used to expertly line the tin of joy...

..as you can see we were in a kitchen with all mod cons, including...

...the Bakerella blog on Jess' laptop.

These are Jess' very cool scales that let you switch between units of measurement, and reset them to zero to add the next lot of igredients. I call them her drug dealer scales as you can measure really small amounts of mass.

Pint glasses are the best recepticle for beating eggs.

Mmm...buttery sugar!

Lots and lots of cocoa!

Beat that cake mix!

Whilst the cake was in the oven, we made cream cheese icing to bind it all together:

Then we set to work crumbling cake!

After we mixed in the icing, we made the cake balls...

..stuck lolly pop sticks in them...

and kept dipping and dipping...

These one are dipped in white chocolate...

We then made the chocolate yellow to make some little chick cake pops.

Decorating them was my favoutite bit. I think they came out really well...

Now Austin's birthday cake should have cooled so I can ice it...

Random Band Meme

Here are the rules as stolen from Gareth:

Band name
Go to a random Wikipedia article. The name of the article becomes your band name.

Album title
Next go to Random Quotations. The last 4-5 words of the last quotation on the page are your the title of your first album.

Album cover
Now go to Flickr’s Explore the last 7 days and choose the third picture. This will be your album cover.

Final article

Finally put them all together and you have an album cover.

Ehrenfelser are a German indie chill out band with a huge following in Bristol in the wake of Massive Attack. They will never make the top 40. This is a good thing. The self concious pretensious lyrics hurt.

Book Swallowing

I've swallowed three books in the last two days. I feel like some kind of literature vampire. They have just slung words from page to brain. It is grand. The first was Times Eye by Arthur C. Clarke and Stephen Baxter. I enjoyed romping through time and space. The second was New Moon from the Twilight books, and last was Sunstorm by Clark and Baxter again. The Twilight books are such trash. Page turning compelling trash. So much of it is on emotion and feeling that you get utterly swept up. But there's so little description or depth or background. I found wanted more detail, a finer brush in the picure
Small parts of string theory and relativity have unravelled themselves for me. I love books that teach you so many other things in side their stories. It is alarming. It makes my brain hurt. But I feel alive learning about them.

I'm also building small dream houses as I prepare to move in with Tom. It's a welcome distraction from other things. We discuss paint colours and wonder round National Trust villages trying to justify £600 handmade bespoke oak dressers as investment pieces.

Our living room will be green. I'm channelling the dining room in Chartwell, where Churchill lived. Pea green, creams, whites, light browns. It's Tom's choice the green, and I see it like Joey's minibus in the Chalet School Books. Restful, calm full of people. The dining room black, white , shades of red and orange. The study/spare room shall remain as it is, as shall the bathroom in it's rainbow tiled glory.

But the bedroom leaves me stumped. I guess I shall fall back in literature for idea. Maria's room. in the Little White Horse is too whimisical, Anne's too girlish. Perhaps Emily's, perhaps not. Sometimes I want lilac, some times a torquoise, some times lime green and crimson. It's the blue that I keep coming back to. One wall blue, the other off white, with jewel toned every thing else, and white furniture. Bright and airy.

I need the space.

Quel heure est-il?

Spring has sprungen. It is joyous. I love tumbling over grass and stone on my bike, glassy horizons breezing by. So far this month I have loved being serenaded by birds on my bike rides to work. I have love warm sunshine on skin.

I have fallen for a cafe in Bedford Place called Yoma. Delicious food served with wit and smiles. Not bad price rise. I recommend an Oli's Panino, their hot chocolate and their espresso and orange brownies.

Craft wise has been slow on the uptake, but the blanket is one ball of yarn from being finished. Half a sock for amy, half a toy chest left to paint.

Work has been busy which is nice.

Nothing else to report.

Look I won a Prize!

http://www.southampton.ac.uk/parkes/news/news-08-moss.shtml

I quote:

Alex Jones won the undergraduate prize for her essay, Unravelling Threads: Contextualising the Women of the Hebrew Bible, and their Impact. The standard this year was high and the judges enjoyed reading the varied entries and were pleased that so many undergraduates qualified for consideration.

No Time

I've been working hard.

Pulling long days.

It's killing me.

Blanket is one ball away from finished. Hopefully the baby will have use for it still.

We've had snow here for a few days. It was beautiful. And today freezing white mists.

Everything covered in pure clean white loveliness.

I never thought I'd be envious of students. I miss the library. I'll go tomorrow after work. Try and put together something meaningful, useful.

These friends of mine are all healthcare professionals and Phd students. It makes me feel like a capitalist pig. At least I have a job is what I tell myself, and console myself with volunteering at a museum on Sundays.

I like volunteering. It's peaceful and I knit quietly making sure old artefacts from an original shop front don't disappear into collectors pockets. I like hearing local's stories of their time in the shop when young and all their anecdotes.

I feel small and lacking in time to do anything. Like time is running out. I don't know why.

Tom is AWESOME!

He bought me four different kinds of goats cheese. No longer shall I dream about cheese! The cheddar is amazing!

He also polished by boots for me as I ate my breakfast.

I love him.
